Phuong
Feminine · “the phoenix bird”
Phuong is given to both — 1,033 girls and 282 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Phuong is the Vietnamese name of a bird that European translators decided was a phoenix. It is not one. The creature in Chinese and Vietnamese tradition does not burn, does not die, does not rise from its own ashes and is not solitary — it appears in pairs and stands for harmony rather than for resurrection.

The story of Phuong
The two birds have been confused since the first European accounts of China. The western phoenix is a single immortal bird that burns itself and is reborn, which is a story about death and resurrection and was taken up enthusiastically by Christian writers. The eastern one is an emblem of the empress, of the south, of summer, and of a marriage — it is paired with the dragon and the pair together means a couple. Calling it a phoenix imported a story it never had, and every English translation of a Chinese or Vietnamese poem for four centuries has quietly carried the mistake along.
Meaningscholars disagree
the phoenix bird, or the flame tree
The bird of the eastern tradition was given the western name by Jesuit translators reaching for the nearest familiar thing, and the label has stuck for four hundred years despite the two having almost nothing in common. The same Vietnamese word also names the flame tree, whose scarlet flowers open at the end of the school year and are one of the standard images of Vietnamese childhood. A name in an American record may be either, and the mark that separates them does not survive the paperwork.
How the name formed
- a Chinese emblem of the empress and of harmony
- European translators call it a phoenix
- the same word names the flame tree in Vietnam
- resettlement brings the name to America after 1975
- used for daughters and sons alike in the record

Fashion outlook
Phuong sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It carries a specific and beautiful image rather than an abstract quality.
- It works for a daughter or a son, which Vietnamese naming allows.
- Six letters, one syllable, and impossible to shorten into anything unwanted.
- English speakers will read the ph as two sounds and the vowel as almost anything.
- The bird it names is not the bird the translation suggests.
- The mark that separates the two possible meanings cannot survive American records.
