The story of Phillipe
In the 1790s the physician Philippe Pinel, working at the Bicêtre and Salpêtrière hospitals in Paris, argued that the mentally ill should be treated with care rather than chains, and the moment of unchaining became one of the founding scenes of modern psychiatry. On the morning of 7 August 1974 Philippe Petit, a French high-wire artist, stepped out on a cable strung between the towers of the World Trade Center and walked, danced and lay down on it for forty-five minutes. Phillipe, with the double l of the English Phillip, is a spelling used by American families.
