The two English words spelled page are unrelated. One is a boy in service, from a French word of murky descent; the other is a sheet of paper, from the Latin pagina, which meant a column of writing and before that something fastened together. They arrived separately, met in spelling, and have been confused ever since.

Where it comes from

The story of Payge

A page was a stage in a career rather than a job. A boy entered a household in his seventh year or so, waited at table, carried messages and learned to ride; at about fourteen he might become a squire, attached to one knight, responsible for his horses and armor; and knighthood, if it came, came later still. The whole arrangement was an apprenticeship in which the tuition was paid in service. The word kept the first rung of that ladder and lost the rest, which is why it now suggests a small boy in livery rather than the beginning of a profession.

Meaning

A young servant

The occupational surname, from the boy attached to a household or a knight rather than from anything to do with books. The word itself has been traced to Italian and to Greek without agreement, which is unusual for a term this common in medieval records.

Payge sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2006, with 63 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Payge sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable and nothing at all that can be mispronounced.
  • The word behind it is concrete and its history is easy to tell.
  • It goes with almost any surname and any rhythm.
What to consider
  • Paige is far commoner and Page is the plain word, so this spelling is corrected twice.
  • A one-syllable name gives nothing to shorten and no formal version to grow into.
  • The y is doing work the silent e already did.
