Where it comes from

The story of Paris

The Parisii lived on the Seine and gave the city its name; a separate Parisii tribe lived in Yorkshire. The Trojan Paris judged the goddesses and took Helen, and his name may be Anatolian rather than Greek. Both routes reach the modern name, which appears in American records for both sexes in current use.

Not established

Two unrelated names. The city takes its name from the Parisii, a Gaulish tribe whose own name is unrecovered. The Trojan prince Paris bears a name Greek could not explain either, possibly Luwian. Neither is settled and the two are unconnected.

Paris sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1991, with 297 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • That the city and the Trojan prince are unrelated names is a first-rate correction.
  • Two clean syllables with no pronunciation risk in English.
  • It is recognized everywhere.
What to consider
  • Neither origin is recovered.
  • It reads as more feminine than masculine in America.
  • The city association is total.
