Where it comes from

Our story of Avion

Our story of Avion is a story of a word invented on purpose. Clément Ader built an early flying machine and coined avion for it from the Latin for a bird, and French adopted it. American naming meanwhile built a family on the -vion ending in the 1990s — Davion, Javion, Jayvion, Zavion. Avion appears in the registers among them. The French word has a documented inventor; the name's route into English does not.

Meaningscholars disagree

airplane; from a bird

The French avion, 'airplane', was coined by Clément Ader from the Latin avis, 'bird'. As an American given name it may draw on that or be a coinage on the -vion ending, alongside Davion and Javion. The French word is documented; the name's descent is not.

Avion sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2022, with 132 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • That the French word for an airplane was coined from 'bird' is a first-rate fact.
  • Avi is available as a short form that is a real name elsewhere.
  • Three syllables of open vowels, which carries unusually well.
What to consider
  • In French it is the ordinary word for an airplane.
  • French and English say it entirely differently.
  • The name's descent is not documented.
