The story of Oziah

Uzziah, also called Azariah, ruled Judah for fifty-two years and rebuilt its army and defenses; Chronicles says he grew proud, burned incense in the temple against the priests' warning, and was struck with leprosy on the spot. Isaiah's vision is dated to the year of his death. Oziah appears in American records in current use.

Meaning

the Lord is my strength

Through Uzziah, from the Hebrew Uzziyahu — oz, 'strength', and Yahu, the divine name. It is a complete statement rather than a word. The same oz opens Uzzi and Uzziel. The Hebrew is ordinary and the reading undisputed.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is a complete statement and is undisputed.
  • A fifty-two-year reign and a genuinely dramatic downfall stand behind it.
  • Ozzie and Ziah are two short forms, both with real use.
What to consider
  • Uzziah is the standard biblical spelling.
  • The king's story ends badly and pointedly.
  • Josiah and Isaiah are close enough to cause confusion.
