The story of Orrin
Odhrán was Colum Cille's companion and, tradition says, was buried beneath the foundations of Iona. Separately, Hebrew oren names a pine and is a modern Israeli name. Orrin has been used in America since the nineteenth century, notably by a long-serving senator. It is in current use.

Two routes. The Irish Odhrán, from odhar, 'dun' or 'sallow'. Or the Hebrew oren, 'pine tree' or 'ash'. Both are genuine names and both are attributed for Orrin. Neither is established for American use.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
