Where it comes from

The story of Ormond

The Butler family were made earls of Ormond in 1328, and the title carried the old territory's name into English use, written both Ormond and Ormonde over the centuries. The name spread as a surname and a place-name, and in Florida the wide, firm beach at Ormond drew the first generation of motorists, who raced there before there were proper tracks. As an American first name, Ormond follows the surname, and no record shows which of its families first used it that way.

Ormond sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 22 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Ormond sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented meaning and a medieval Irish history that can be told in one sentence.
  • A place in American motoring history through the speed trials at Ormond Beach.
  • Spelled as it sounds, with no silent letters.
What to consider
  • It sits close in sound to Raymond and Edmund, and people may mishear it on first meeting.
  • Anyone who knows the Irish titles may add a final e, as in Ormonde; it is an easy correction.
