The story of Orlanda
In Virginia Woolf's novel Orlando, a young nobleman of Elizabethan England lives on for centuries and one morning wakes as a woman, carrying on unchanged in every other way. The name came from the Italian form of Roland, the knight of the medieval epics. Orlanda, with its a, looks like a feminine, yet American families gave it mostly to sons, so it serves both, much as Woolf's hero did.
