Oris is one of a great many short names that American families made for themselves in the last decades of the nineteenth century, and its source cannot be recovered. What can be done is to place it: it sits one letter from orris, a word with an unexpectedly good story, and two steps from the iris, which named a flower, a part of the eye and a goddess with a single Greek word.
How old is the name Oris?
Oris first appears in US birth records in 1891 — 134 years ago. The typical Oris alive today was born around 1927, making them about 98 years old. About 400 people named Oris are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Our story of Oris
The word it most resembles is worth the detour. Orris root is the dried rhizome of a particular iris, ground and used for centuries as a fixative in perfume and as a scent in its own right; the word orris is simply iris, worn down in the mouths of traders who had no reason to keep the Greek shape intact. And iris is one of the most productive single words the language ever borrowed. It was the name of the goddess who carried messages between the gods and mortals along the rainbow, so the Greeks used it for the rainbow itself, then for the flower that comes in every color a rainbow has, and then for the colored ring of the eye. One word, four jobs, all of them still current. A name that sits beside all that carries no part of it, but a child asking where their name comes from can at least be told what it stands next to, and that the truthful answer to the other question is that nobody wrote it down.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source can be established. It has been connected to Horace, to Otis and to Orris, and each connection is plausible on sound and unsupported by anything else. Names of this kind were made locally, often from a syllable of a longer family name, and they entered the record without any accompanying explanation because nobody at the time thought one was required. The honest description is a home-made name from a particular time and region, which is a real category and not a failure of research.
How the name formed
- Home-made short names in the late nineteenth century
- Oris in the registers without an explanation
- Given to sons and to daughters alike
- Rare on both sides ever since
Pronouncing Oris
OR-iss
Two syllables, stress on the first. The vowel is the one in for rather than the one in go, so it does not rhyme with Boris in the mouth of most American speakers, though it looks as though it should.

Fashion outlook
Oris sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, easily said and impossible to shorten further, which some families prefer.
- It reads as antique rather than as invented, even though it was invented, which is a rare combination.
- It works on the register for either sex, and it carries no fashionable associations at all.
- There is no meaning and no origin to give, and that is the accurate answer rather than a gap to be filled.
- It will be heard as Orrin, Otis or Boris on a first introduction.
- The name is on the register for girls as well as boys, so it signals nothing on paper.
