Onnie
Masculine
Onnie is given to both — 657 boys and 1,079 girls since 1880. See Onnie as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Onnie begins with a letter that English almost never uses at the front of a name. Run through the names in common use and the O column is nearly empty — Oliver, Olivia, Owen, Opal, Oscar, and then a long silence. The letter is common enough inside words and rare at the start of them, and a name beginning with it stands out for that reason alone.

Our story of Onnie
The scarcity of O at the front of English names is not an accident of taste. English inherited its stock of names from Hebrew, Greek, Latin and Germanic, and none of those four contributed many that begin with this vowel; the Germanic ones mostly start with a hard consonant, and the Latin ones that begin with O — Octavia, Olympia — stayed rare in English mouths. So the letter arrived at the modern era with almost nothing attached to it, and a family reaching for a name that started with it had very little to choose from and often ended up making one. That is probably what happened here. The letter itself is the reason the name exists.

Not established
No longer name has ever been demonstrated behind this one. It may be a shortening of something — Iona, Winona, Leona and Ona have all been suggested — or it may be one of the very short American names of the period that were never anything else. The ending is the standard nineteenth-century pet-form ending, which points towards a longer name without identifying it. That is as far as the evidence goes, and it does not go far.
How the name formed

- the nineteenth-century pet-form ending in general use

Fashion outlook
Onnie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, warm and impossible to mispronounce.
- It works for a child of either sex, and the record carries it on both sides.
- It begins with a letter that almost nothing else does, which makes it stand out on any list.
- There is no meaning and no parent name, and nobody can supply either.
- It reads as a pet form, so people will look for a longer name that does not exist.
- It belongs to the oldest layer of the American record and has had no revival.
