The story of Oneal
The Ui Neill were the dominant dynasty in the north and center of Ireland for six centuries, claiming descent from Niall Noigiallach, Niall of the Nine Hostages, a semi-legendary high king of about the fifth century. In 2006 geneticists at Trinity College Dublin reported a Y-chromosome haplotype carried by a strikingly high proportion of men with Ui Neill surnames and by around one in five men in north-west Ireland, consistent with a single very successful male line. The finding has been debated and refined since, and the identification with Niall himself is an inference rather than a fact, but the pattern is real. Few surnames come with that kind of evidence attached, and the apostrophe, dropped in the American spelling, is the last trace of the word meaning descendant.
