The story of Olivette
Olive and Olivia were English names from the Middle Ages onward, and French made Olive and Olivette. A comic opera first staged in Paris in 1879 called Les Noces d'Olivette was a large international success and put the name in front of English-speaking audiences in the eighteen-eighties and nineties, which is exactly when it appears in American records. It went quiet after the First World War, along with most of the -ette names, and Olivia is the form that came back.
Meaning
little olive
Latin oliva, the olive, with the French diminutive -ette. The olive branch as a token of peace goes back to Greek and Roman practice and appears in the Genesis flood story, which is why the tree carries what it carries.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a single tree with an enormous documented history behind it.
- It offers several short forms, Olive and Livy and Ollie, all of them current.
- It is genuinely rare while every part of it is familiar.
- Olivia is far commoner and will be assumed by people who half-heard it.
- The -ette ending reads as of the nineteenth century, which is charm to some families and age to others.
- Two stress patterns circulate, one French and one American.
