The story of Ohana
The word's root is agricultural: oha names the offshoot of a taro corm, and the family is the whole plant. That is a genuinely different image from the English word, which comes from a Latin term for a household including its servants. Ohana became widely known outside Hawaii through an animated film of 2002, and its use as a given name follows from that rather than from Hawaiian naming practice.
Meaning
family, extended household
From Hawaiian ohana, built on oha, the shoot of the taro plant; the metaphor is of a root sending up new growth, so a family is a single plant with many shoots rather than a set of separate individuals.

About 1 girl in 33,485 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 40,182 for Ohana itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Samyra test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ohana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Samyra climbed just as high around 2007, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Samyra's path sketches the road Ohana is walking now.
Ohana sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning with a genuinely good image behind it — a plant with many shoots.
- Hana is a complete name in several unrelated languages.
- Open vowels make it easy to say in most languages.
- It is an ordinary Hawaiian noun rather than a traditional Hawaiian name, which Hawaiian speakers will notice.
- The animated film is the reason most people recognize it.
- The glottal stop at the beginning is part of the word and is lost in English.
