Where it comes from

Our story of Nylan

Our story of Nylan runs past Nolan without quite touching it. The Ó Nualláin were princes of Forth in Leinster and their office was hereditary: they inaugurated the kings of Leinster, which is a specific and rather grand job for a family to hold for centuries. The word at the bottom of the name is a shout — of acclaim, most likely, since that is what an inauguration involves. Nylan may descend from that and may simply rhyme with it. What is worth knowing either way is that the name it stands next to has a real office and a real word behind it, and this one has the sound.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Nothing is documented for Nylan. Irish Ó Nualláin comes from Nuallán, a diminutive of nuall, 'a shout, a cry' — sometimes glossed 'famous' by extension, sometimes 'chariot-fighter' on a different reading, and neither has been settled. Whether Nylan descends from Nolan or was assembled on the Ny- and -lan shapes in current use is unrecorded. Both roads are available.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Nylan went to 40 boys in 2025, but Nilan is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 83, which makes it the 845th most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,191 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 20,579 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 42,702 for Nylan itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two easy syllables that every English speaker says correctly at first sight.
  • Five letters, nothing silent, and easy for a small child to write.
  • Sits in a familiar sound family, so it never needs introducing.
What to consider
  • It has no documented meaning, so anything offered for it has been supplied.
  • Nylan, Nolan, Nilan and Nylen are all in use and none is standard.
  • The two pronunciations both circulate, so the child will be correcting people.
