The story of Nunzio
Italian naming draws heavily on feasts rather than on saints: a child born at Christmas is Natale, at Easter Pasquale, on the Assumption Assunta, on the Annunciation Annunziato or Nunzio, and Concetta comes from the Immaculate Conception. The custom made the church calendar into a name calendar, and it produced names that are events rather than people. The word behind this one, nuntius, a messenger, also gave the papal nuncio, an ambassador of the Holy See, an office with permanent postings from the 1500s that makes the Vatican's diplomatic service the oldest still operating. So the name names an announcement, and its root names the profession of announcing.
