Our story of Norita
A noria is a wheel that lifts water. Pots or buckets are fixed around its rim, the current turns it, and every revolution tips water from the river into a channel above it, using no power but the river's own. The word is Arabic, from a root meaning to groan, because the wheels do, continuously, and audibly from a long way off. Spain is full of them because Arabic-speaking engineers built them there, and some are still standing and still turning. It is a good thing to be one letter away from: a machine that does its work by being pushed, makes a noise about it, and has been running since the Middle Ages. Norita is not named after one. But the shape of the word is the same.

Not established
Nora is the usual suggestion, and Nora's own origin is argued over: it has been read as a short form of Honora and of Eleanora, which are unrelated names. Adding the ending settles none of that, and nothing documents this form directly.

Fashion outlook
Norita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Two ready-made short forms, Nora and Rita, both of them ordinary names.
- It works in English and in Spanish without any adjustment.
- Three open syllables carry well and are easy to hear across a room.
- It will be heard as Nerita, Lorita and Rosita by people catching it once.
- The diminutive ending reads as affectionate to Spanish speakers, which some adults find wearing.
- No origin is documented, so the meaning question has a likely answer rather than a settled one.
