Where it comes from

Our story of Noni

Polynesian voyagers did not arrive anywhere empty-handed. They carried a standard set of plants and animals in the canoes — taro, breadfruit, banana, sugarcane, ti, paper mulberry, yam, coconut, the noni fruit, and pigs, dogs and chickens — because a new island might have almost nothing edible on it. Botanists call them canoe plants, and their distribution across the Pacific is a map of where the voyages went: paper mulberry, which cannot spread itself because the Pacific populations are all female clones, traces the routes almost exactly. The noni is one of the more revealing members of the set, because the fruit smells appalling and tastes worse; it was carried anyway, for medicine and for dye and as a famine food, which tells you what the voyagers expected to find.

No source is documented. It may shorten Nora, Winona, Antonia or Yvonne, it may be a reduplicated familiar form, or it may be built from the sound. The identical Polynesian plant name is a coincidence.

Noni sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1975, with 29 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Noni sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters with no silent ones make it quick to write and simple to spell aloud.
  • Two open syllables are easy for a small child to say.
  • It is warm and immediately readable at first sight.
What to consider
  • Nonie, Noni and Nona will all be confused with one another.
  • The first vowel has two readings, so the name is said two ways.
  • It reads as a nickname, and people will ask what it stands for.
