Where it comes from

The story of Nolberto

In 1115 Norbert of Xanten, a courtier who lived well on church income, was caught in a thunderstorm; a lightning strike threw him from his horse, and when he came to he changed his life, becoming a preacher and in 1120 founding the Premonstratensian order, the Norbertines. Spanish took the name as Norberto. In Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and other Caribbean Spanish, an r at the end of a syllable is often said as an l — puelta for puerta — and Nolberto writes that pronunciation down.
