Noelle
Feminine · Latin roots · “Christmas”
Noelle is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 44,457 girls against 115 boys since 1880.
Noelle comes from the French word for Christmas, and behind that word sits the Latin natalis — a birth day. It has been a French given name for centuries, handed to children born in the last days of December, and it arrived in English carrying that whole midwinter history with it. Said aloud it is two syllables with the weight at the end, noh-EL, the same shape as the carol refrain.

The story of Noelle
In medieval France, dies natalis — the birth day — wore down in speech to noel, which became simply the word for Christmas. Children born in that season were given the name outright, Noël for a boy and Noëlle for a girl, and the practice held for centuries. The word crossed into English early enough to leave the spelling Nowell in carols and in English surnames. Noelle is the French feminine form as it settled into English-speaking use, keeping the accent-free spelling and the stress on the second syllable.

The Melba test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Noelle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Melba climbed just as high around 1924, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Melba's path sketches the road Noelle is walking now.
Noelle sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is settled and easy to explain in one sentence, which is more than most names offer.
- Ready-made short forms — Elle, Nell, Nellie — that already work as names on their own.
- Familiar in French, Spanish and English, so it travels without needing to be respelled or re-explained.
- In continuous use across several generations of American records without ever becoming crowded in a classroom.
- The Christmas link is permanent and immediate. People will ask whether the birthday is in December, and the question will not stop being asked in July.
- Noel, Noelle and the Spanish Noelia sit close together, and the double-L spelling will need saying aloud now and then. Noel alone is usually a man's name in English, which adds a little confusion at the margins.
- The stress can land on either syllable depending on who is speaking, so expect to correct it occasionally — a small, easy correction rather than a lifelong one.
