Where it comes from

The story of Nitin

Niti is the Sanskrit word for prudent conduct and statecraft, and a whole genre of Indian literature was written to teach it. The best known is the Panchatantra, a book of animal fables composed for the education of princes; it was translated into Persian and Arabic as Kalila and Dimna, passed into Hebrew, Latin and the European vernaculars, and some of its stories reached La Fontaine. In 2015 the Indian government replaced its old Planning Commission with a new policy institution called NITI Aayog, a name that works both as an acronym and as the Sanskrit word. Nitin, built on the same root, came to the United States with Indian families in the late twentieth century.
