Where it comes from

The story of Nikkita

For a generation of Americans the name belonged to exactly one person: the Soviet premier who banged on a desk at the United Nations, argued with a vice president in a model kitchen, and took the world closer to nuclear war than it has been before or since. It was not a name anyone in the United States gave to a child. Then a French director made a film about a woman called Nikita, it was successful enough to produce an American remake and two television series, and the name detached itself from the premier and attached itself to the character. Within a few years it was appearing on American birth certificates, given to daughters, in a set of spellings of which this is one.

Meaning

victory of the people

The Greek name behind it joins the words for victory and people, and it is the same first element that sits inside Nicholas. The reading is settled; what is unusual is where the name ended up.

Three syllables with the weight in the middle. The doubled k does not change the sound, though it makes the first vowel look shorter than it is.

Fashion outlook

Nikkita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and documented, which is unusual for a name that arrived by way of a film.
  • Nikki is available as a short form from the first day and needs no explaining.
  • Three syllables with a strong middle stress carry well and are easy to remember.
What to consider
  • The doubled k is unusual, so this spelling will be corrected to Nikita regularly.
  • In Russia and much of eastern Europe this is a man's name, and Russian speakers will notice.
  • The film association is specific and dated, which places the name in time for anyone who remembers it.
