Where it comes from

Our story of Nikkie

The Winged Victory of Samothrace was excavated in the eighteen-sixties in more than a hundred fragments, shipped to Paris, and reassembled over years; the right hand turned up decades later in a separate dig and is displayed in a case nearby. The head has never been found. The figure stands at the top of a staircase in the Louvre on a base carved as the prow of a ship, and the drapery is carved as though a wind is coming straight at it off the sea, which is the effect the sculptor was after and which the missing head does nothing to spoil. Several art historians have argued it is better without one.

Nikkie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1985, with 31 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Nikkie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is completely familiar, so it is never a puzzle to say.
  • It is short on paper and quick for a child to learn to write.
  • The spelling is visually distinct from the commoner versions, which is what it is for.
What to consider
  • Nikki, Nicki and Nikky are all in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you constantly.
  • It reads as a short form to some people, so formal settings will ask what it stands for.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question belongs to a longer name nobody has identified.
