The goddess was a winged figure who attended the greater gods and personified the outcome of a contest, and she is one of the most reproduced figures in Greek art: the enormous headless statue at the top of the stairs in the Louvre is her. When an Oregon shoe company needed a name in the early nineteen seventies, an employee suggested hers, apparently after seeing her in a dream, and the founder disliked it and used it anyway because the deadline had arrived. The logo was designed by a student for thirty-five dollars. The name is now recognized in every country in the world, which is a considerable second career for a minor Greek deity, and it is the same word that stands at the front of Nicholas.
