Where it comes from

The story of Nikki

The goddess of victory kept her job for three thousand years. She stood in Greek temples with wings, was carved onto Roman coins, gave her name to a city in Asia Minor, and then, in the nineteen-seventies, to a shoe company — proposed by an employee who said it came to him on waking, and accepted by a founder who had wanted something else and was out of time. The name's best-known American bearer took hers a different way. The poet Nikki Giovanni was christened Yolande and was called Nikki by an older sister; she kept it, put it on every book she published, and has been writing under a nickname for sixty years.

Meaning

Victory of the people

The names behind it, Nicole and Nicholas, join the Greek words for victory and people. The short form carries that by descent rather than by construction, and many bearers of this spelling have no long form at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Nikki went to 44 girls in 2025, but Niki is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 57, which makes it the 903rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,556 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 28,198 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 36,529 for Nikki itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
