Nicollette
Feminine · “Victory of the people”
Nicolette is the heroine of the only medieval French work of its kind that survives: a story told half in prose and half in song, with the music written into the manuscript, so that a performer spoke one section and sang the next. There was probably a whole genre of them. This is the one that made it.

The story of Nicollette
Aucassin and Nicolette is thirteenth-century, anonymous, and knowingly funny. A young nobleman refuses to fight for his father unless he can marry the captive girl he is in love with; the girl is far more capable than he is and does most of the escaping; and at one point the pair arrive in a country where the king is in bed having the baby and the queen is away commanding the army, which the story presents without comment. The alternation of spoken and sung sections is called a chantefable, a word the text uses about itself, and no other complete example has ever been found. A single manuscript preserves it, and a name went into French and then English use because of it.

Victory of the people, made small
Greek nike, victory, and laos, the people, giving Nicholas, with a French feminine diminutive on the end. The compound is a boast about a community rather than a person. The doubled l in this spelling belongs to neither French nor English practice and is an American addition.

Three syllables with the stress at the back, which the French ending brings with it. The doubled l changes nothing: the vowel before it was already short and there was nothing to guard.

Fashion outlook
Nicollette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The name is at home in French, Italian and German with almost no change.
- Three short forms in three registers, from the brisk Nicki to the antique Lettie.
- Final stress gives the name a definite finish and makes it carry when called.
- Nicolette with one l is the standard spelling in every language including English.
- Three syllables with the stress at the end is a formal shape, and a short form will be chosen early.
- It will be heard as Nicole and as Colette, both of which are commoner.
