Spanish makes a feminine by changing the final vowel and English cannot do it at all. Nicolas becomes Nicolasa, Antonio becomes Antonia, Francisco becomes Francisca: one letter, applied by rule, with no borrowing and no thought required. English has to import a suffix every time.

Where it comes from

The story of Nicolasa

The saint of the name is the patron of sailors and of thieves at the same time. The sailors come from a story about him calming a storm on a voyage to the Holy Land, and Mediterranean ports are full of churches dedicated to him for that reason; the thieves come from English slang of the sixteenth century, in which highwaymen were called Saint Nicholas's clerks, apparently by association with the story about the bags of gold thrown through a window at night. Shakespeare uses the phrase and assumes his audience knows it. One legend about anonymous night-time gift-giving produced both the patron of pawnbrokers and a joke about robbery.

Meaning

Victory of the people

Greek nike, victory, and laos, the people. The Spanish feminine is formed mechanically from the masculine and adds nothing to the meaning, which is exactly the point: the operation is grammatical rather than lexical, and Spanish speakers do not experience it as making a new name.

Four syllables with the stress on the third. Spanish gives every vowel its full value, which is why the name sounds noticeably longer in Spanish than an English reader expects.

Fashion outlook

Nicolasa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a standard Spanish name formed by rule rather than an invention.
  • Nico is a short, current, unisex everyday form available immediately.
  • The meaning is transparent and can be given to a child in three words.
What to consider
  • Four syllables is a great deal of name and will be shortened by other people.
  • English speakers will reduce the vowels and produce a noticeably different name.
  • It is strongly dated in Spanish-speaking communities as well as in America.
