This spelling puts back the h that the French form dropped. Nicholas keeps it — it is the Greek chi, written the way Latin wrote it — and Nicole does not, because French had no use for a letter it did not pronounce. Nicholle restores it and keeps the French ending, which is a mixed inheritance.

Where it comes from

The story of Nicholle

One story about the saint has him hitting somebody at a church council. The account has him present at Nicaea, losing his temper with a theologian whose views he thought monstrous, and striking him across the face — for which he was briefly stripped of his office before a vision restored it. It appears nowhere in the early records, is first written down centuries afterwards, and almost certainly did not happen; he may not have been at the council at all. It is repeated anyway, with obvious enjoyment, because the idea of that particular saint throwing a punch is too good to leave alone.

Meaning

victory of the people

Two Greek elements and both are transparent. The h is a spelling matter throughout and touches the sense at no point.

Pronouncing Nicholle

ni-KOHL

Two syllables with the weight at the back. The h is silent, as it is in every form of the name, so the restoration is entirely visual.

Nicholle sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1994, with 73 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Nicholle sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling makes the link to the man's name visible again.
  • The stress at the back gives it a decisive finish.
  • It is rarer than the standard form while sounding identical.
What to consider
  • Nicole is overwhelmingly standard and this gets corrected constantly.
  • The restored h adds a letter that nobody sounds.
  • It is closely tied to the decades of its use.
