The story of Nichelle
Uhura was a communications officer on a starship, not a maid or a joke, and in 1966 that was rare enough that Martin Luther King reportedly asked the actor not to leave the show when she considered quitting after the first season, on the grounds that the role itself was doing work. She stayed, and afterwards spent years recruiting for NASA, where several of the astronauts who followed have said the recruitment mattered. The name went into American use immediately and stayed for a generation. It is worth being clear that it is an invented name: no older source lies behind it, and its history begins with one person deciding what to call herself.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Nichelle was constructed rather than descended, so it has no etymology. The pieces are recognizable — the Nich- of Nichols and Nicole, both from Greek Nikolaos, victory of the people, and the French -elle ending — but the compound was assembled for its sound and does not carry the meaning of its parts.

nih-SHELL
Two syllables, stress on the second. The ch is a sh, following the French -elle names rather than the Greek Nikolaos, and nothing in the spelling is ambiguous once that is known.

The Manuela test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nichelle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Manuela climbed just as high around 1920, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Manuela's path sketches the road Nichelle is walking now.
Nichelle sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
