Where it comes from

The story of Neyland

Niall is among the very oldest Irish names still in use, and the dynasty that claimed descent from Niall of the Nine Hostages dominated the north of Ireland for centuries — which is why so many surnames are built on it. Ó Nialláin was one of them, and English-speaking clerks wrote it down however it sounded: Neylan, Nyland, Neyland, Nealon. The surname reached America with nineteenth-century emigration. Its use as a first name is recent and American, and in parts of the South it also carries the name of a football stadium, which for many people arrives first.

Meaningscholars disagree

descendant of Niallán, a small form of Niall

The Irish surname Ó Nialláin is built on Niallán, a diminutive of Niall, whose own meaning is disputed — 'champion', 'cloud' and 'passionate' have all been proposed and none has carried. The -land ending in Neyland is an English respelling of the Irish -lán rather than the word for land, which is worth knowing before reading a landscape into the name. Neyland is also a town in Pembrokeshire, named in the nineteenth century, which is a separate matter.

Neyland sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2017, with 54 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented Irish surname with a very old personal name at the bottom of it.
  • Two syllables and phonetic spelling, with nothing silent to explain.
  • Distinctive without being difficult, which surname-names often are not.
What to consider
  • The two pronunciations both circulate, so the child will be correcting people.
  • In parts of the South it carries a stadium's name and the association arrives first.
  • Neyland, Neylan and Nyland are all in use and get confused in writing.
