Where it comes from

Our story of Neyda

Zenith is an Arabic word that a medieval scribe got wrong. The Arabic phrase was samt ar-ras, the direction of the head, and it entered Latin astronomy as samt. Somewhere in the manuscript tradition a copyist read the m as an n followed by an i — the letters are near-identical in the hands of the period, both being short vertical strokes — and wrote senit. That became cenit, then zenith, and the error was reproduced in every astronomical text afterwards until it was simply the word. Nadir, the opposite point, came from the same Arabic vocabulary and survived intact. So English has a matched pair of technical terms from one source, one of which is correct and one of which records a scribe's slip about two identical pen strokes.

Not established

No derivation has been established. It resembles Nelida, Neida and Nayda without descending demonstrably from any of them, and the pattern fits the large family of twentieth-century Latin American builds. Glosses offered for it online are supplied after the fact.

Pronouncing Neyda

NAY-dah

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The ey is a Spanish diphthong and says ay, which is also what an English reader would guess.

Neyda sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2002, with 53 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Neyda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it quick to write and simple to spell aloud.
  • It reads correctly on sight in both Spanish and English.
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape there is.
What to consider
  • Neida, Nayda and Nelida are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • There is no documented origin, so the meaning question has no honest answer.
  • It is closely tied to Spanish-speaking families, which is either the point or beside it.
