The story of Neve
Niamh has been in Irish use since the early literature and became very common in Ireland in the late twentieth century, at which point English speakers who liked it needed a spelling that could survive a phone call — Neve, Nieve and Neave all appear. On the other side, Portuguese and Italian families have used Neve and Neves from the snow, a word already carrying a Marian association. The two lines are unrelated and have converged on one spelling in English-language records.
Meaningscholars disagree
bright, radiant, or snow
Irish Niamh means bright or radiant and is the name of a figure in the Fenian cycle who carries a hero away to the land of youth. Italian and Portuguese neve is snow, from the Latin nix, and Nossa Senhora das Neves is a Portuguese Marian title.

The Laurita test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Neve's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Laurita climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Laurita's path sketches the road Neve is walking now.
Neve sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It solves a real problem: the Irish sound with a spelling that English readers get right.
- Two documented meanings from two unrelated languages, both concrete and pleasant.
- Four letters and one syllable, about as easy as a name can be to write.
- Irish speakers may see the anglicized spelling as a loss, and Niamh is the form with the history.
- The one-syllable and two-syllable readings are both defensible, so she will be asked which she uses.
- Neve, Neave and Nieve all appear in English records and get mixed up.
