Where it comes from

The story of Laurita

The laurel wreath crowned victors and poets in Rome, and English still says someone is 'resting on their laurels' — a phrase that first meant enjoying honors already won and only later came to mean coasting on them. Laura Montoya, a Colombian schoolteacher known to many as Madre Laura, left the city in 1914 to live and teach among the Embera and other indigenous peoples, founded a missionary order of sisters, and in 2013 became the first Colombian to be canonized. Laurita, the everyday Spanish form, came into American use with Spanish-speaking families in the early twentieth century.
