Nelma is an ordinary Brazilian name and an American coinage at the same time, arrived at separately by people who never met. It is short, it looks formal, and it was built the same way in both places: take a pet form and add a syllable until it stops sounding like a nickname.

Where it comes from

Our story of Nelma

The trick is to make a pet form sound like a full name, and adding a syllable is the cheapest way to do it. Nell is unmistakably a shortening; Nelma is not, because the ending is heavy enough to carry stress and because -ma is not a diminutive in English and so does not read as one. The same operation produces Wilma, Selma, Thelma, Velma and Zelma, and most of those have origins about as thin as this one; Thelma was invented by a novelist and the rest were built by families. Brazil does the same thing on a much larger scale and with more inventiveness, and the two traditions produced this name independently, which is a good demonstration that the method is obvious rather than clever.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source in either country. In Brazil it belongs to a large family of names built by recombining syllables, a tradition at least as old and as productive as the American one; in the United States it is likeliest a build on Nell. Neither line is documented, and the two are independent of each other.

Pronouncing Nelma

NEL-muh

Two syllables with the stress at the front. Portuguese gives the final vowel a fuller value and English reduces it to nothing, which is the only audible difference between the two countries' versions.

Nelma sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1926, with 50 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Nelma sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, firm and easy to spell, with nothing silent and nothing ambiguous.
  • It reads as a full name rather than a nickname, which is what the extra syllable is for.
  • It is genuinely current in Brazil, so it is not confined to one country.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Selma, Thelma and Velma, all of which are commoner in English.
  • There is no meaning to give a child who asks, in either of its two homes.
  • It is strongly dated to the early twentieth century in American records.
