Where it comes from

Our story of Necia

Nice has changed its meaning more often than almost any word in English. It came from Latin nescius, not knowing, through French, and in the thirteenth century it meant ignorant or foolish. Then it meant wanton. Then fussy or fastidious — a nice eater was a difficult one. Then precise, which is the sense preserved in a nice distinction and a nice judgment, and which is what a careful writer still means by it. Then, from the eighteenth century, agreeable, and finally the flat all-purpose approval it carries now, which teachers have been telling children to avoid for a hundred years. Six distinct senses, each of which was standard in its period, and the only thread running through them is the idea of a distinction being made — sharply, then pedantically, then not at all.

Meaningnot established

Not established

It may be a clipping of a longer name, an independent Spanish-language build, or the Latin adjective nescia, meaning not knowing. That adjective is also the ancestor of the English word nice, and there is no evidence any family had it in mind.

Necia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1964, with 18 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Necia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and hard to mishear.
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it simple to spell aloud.
  • It is genuinely rare and belongs to almost nobody now living.
What to consider
  • Nesha, Neesha and Nicia will all be written for it.
  • The ci is read as a hard c by readers who have not met the name.
  • Nothing records its origin, so the meaning question has three answers and no evidence.
