The story of Neal
Niall of the Nine Hostages was a fifth-century high king, historical or half-legendary, from whom the Uí Néill dynasty took its name and its claim. The name traveled to Iceland with Norse settlers — Njáls saga is one of the greatest — and came back into English as Neil and Neal. American use of the -eal spelling rose through the 1940s and peaked in the mid-1950s.
