From Arabic it spread with Islam into Persian and Urdu, into Ottoman Turkish and from there into Bosnian and Albanian as Nezir, and across West and East Africa. Two different Arabic words are romanised the same way in English. نذير (nadhīr) means a warner or herald, a word used in the Qur'an of the Prophet Muhammad. نظير (naẓīr) means an equal or counterpart, and in Urdu usage it commonly carries the sense 'peerless, without equal'. Both are long-established given names, and the English spelling Nazir does not tell you which one a particular family means. A third name, Nasir, 'helper', comes from a separate root and is often confused with it.
