Our story of Natoya
In 1943, on the shore of Lake Tōya in Hokkaido, a wheat field began to rise; over two years it swelled into a new volcanic peak, and because wartime Japan kept it secret, the local postmaster measured its growth himself with string and pins. It was named Shōwa-shinzan, 'new mountain of the Shōwa era'. Natoya was not named for the lake; it came from LaToya and Natasha. But its ending holds a place where the ground itself was new.
