The story of Nastasia

In The Idiot, published in 1868 and 1869, Nastasya Filippovna is a woman whose former guardian is trying to marry her off, and several men are bidding for her. At her name-day party the merchant Rogozhin brings a hundred thousand rubles in a paper packet. She throws it into the fire and tells the ambitious Ganya it is his if he will pull it out with his bare hands; he refuses and faints, and she pulls it out herself with the tongs. Russian names have no single English spelling, and Nastasia is one of several that translators and families have used for her name.

Nastasia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1987, with 29 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Nastasia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Anastasia's meaning and history in a shorter, less crowded form.
  • A great novel gives it a heroine readers remember.
  • Nastya is a ready, affectionate short form.
What to consider
  • People will hear Anastasia and write it that way, or add a second s; the spelling will need saying.
  • Dostoevsky's heroine is murdered at the end of the novel, and readers of The Idiot will know it. The character is memorable rather than lucky, and the name has plenty of life outside the book.
