Where it comes from

The story of Nasario

Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, had a gift for finding martyrs. In 395, according to his secretary and biographer Paulinus, he uncovered the body of Nazarius in a garden outside Milan and had it carried to the Basilica of the Apostles, which Milan now calls San Nazaro. The cult of Nazarius spread through northern Italy, into France, where the port of Saint-Nazaire carries his name, and into Spain, where he became Nazario.

Meaningscholars disagree

of Nazareth, or consecrated

Latin Nazarius is usually read as belonging to Nazareth. Some name books tie it instead to the Hebrew nazir, a person consecrated by vow, the Nazirite of the Bible. The two words look alike, and the name's first bearers left no explanation.

Fashion outlook

Nasario sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A saint's name with a documented history from late Roman Milan.
  • The spelling matches how the name is said across Latin America.
  • The French port of Saint-Nazaire carries the same saint's name.
What to consider
  • Spanish speakers will recognize it as Nazario respelled, and some documents will switch it back to the z.
  • English speakers may say na-SAIR-ee-oh; the Spanish vowels need a word.
