Where it comes from

Our story of Naomy

Ours, offered as ours. The renaming scene in Ruth is one of the rawest things in the Hebrew Bible: a woman comes home widowed and childless and tells her neighbors not to use her name any more, because it means pleasant and nothing about her is. The text records the request and then goes on calling her Naomi anyway, which may be the most quietly merciful editorial decision in scripture. Naomy is a modern respelling of that name.

Meaning

pleasantness, delight

From Hebrew noam, pleasantness; the text plays on it directly, having Naomi say do not call me Naomi, call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt bitterly with me. Mara means bitter.

Naomy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 126 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Naomy went to 31 girls in 2025, but Naomi is the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 4,686, which makes it the 52nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,408 places above the chart.

and 1 rarer spelling.

About 1 girl in 343 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 51,847 for Naomy itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning that the biblical text uses deliberately and painfully.
  • Nomi is a complete short form in its own right.
  • Read correctly on sight by most English speakers.
What to consider
  • Naomi is the standard spelling and will be written for her constantly.
  • The stress differs between the Hebrew and American readings.
  • Naomy, Naomi and Noemi are all in use and only Naomi is common in English.
