Nannie comes from a mistake English made repeatedly and never corrected. 'Mine Ann' was heard as 'my Nan', and the n migrated from one word to the next — the same slip that turned an ewt into a newt and a napron into an apron.

Where it comes from

The story of Nannie

Middle English said 'mine Ann' where modern English says 'my Ann', and in rapid speech the n attached itself to the wrong word. The same process gave Ned from 'mine Ed' and Nell from 'mine Ell'. Nan became a name, Nancy its stretched form, and Nannie the affectionate spelling of Nan that nineteenth-century American families registered as a legal name — it stood in the national top ninety in the 1880s.

Meaning

grace, favor

Through Ann, from the Hebrew channah, 'grace' or 'favor'. Hannah is the mother of Samuel in the Hebrew Bible, and her name reached English through the Greek and Latin form Anna. Nan and Nancy are both products of the same misdivision of 'mine Ann'.

Nannie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 655 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Nannie has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ann and Hannah both stand behind it, among the most-used women's names in the world.
  • The rebracketing story behind it is a genuinely interesting piece of English history.
  • It is soft, warm and immediately easy for a child to say.
What to consider
  • Nanny is an ordinary English noun for a childminder and for a goat, and the spellings sound the same.
  • In much of the English-speaking world the word is also a familiar term for a grandmother.
