Nanci
Feminine
Nancy began as a pet form of two different names and ended up on the map of France. Agnes gave Annis, which gave Nancy; Ann gave Nan, which gave Nancy too. And there is a city called Nancy in Lorraine whose name comes from a Germanic personal name and has nothing to do with either.

The story of Nanci
The formation is worth explaining because it looks impossible. Medieval English speakers said mine Ann and heard my Nan, and the n migrated across the word boundary permanently — the same process that gave Ned from Edward and Nell from Ellen. Nan then took the -cy ending and became Nancy, which went independent centuries ago. The French city is a separate word entirely, from a Germanic name, and the coincidence has confused people for a long time. The bare i spelling is a twentieth-century American addition.

Not established
Two roads and neither ends cleanly. Agnes comes from Greek hagnos, chaste or holy, and was reshaped in Latin toward agnus, a lamb, by writers who preferred that image — a documented substitution rather than an etymology. Ann is Hebrew Hannah, favor, which is settled. Nancy could be a pet form of either, since medieval English made Nan from Ann by attaching the n of mine Ann, and Nancy from Nan. Which parent applies is not recoverable.

Fashion outlook
Nanci sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Nan and Ann are both complete names available behind it in the same family.
- Two syllables, entirely unambiguous, and easy in any accent.
- The n-migration behind the name is a genuinely odd piece of English history and easy to explain.
- Nancy is the standard spelling and this one will be rewritten as that on most documents.
- The name is very strongly associated with the mid twentieth century and dates a person closely.
- In British slang the name has a second and unkind use, which American speakers generally do not know and British ones do.
