Nancy Hanks Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's mother, died in Indiana in 1818 when he was nine, of 'milk sickness': cattle that grazed on white snakeroot passed a poison into their milk, a cause not understood until much later. Nancy Langhorne of Virginia married into the Astor family in England, and in 1919, as Nancy Astor, she became the first woman to take a seat in the House of Commons.
