Namon may be a worn-down Naaman and may be nothing at all. It appears in American records without explanation, in the same communities and the same decades as a long list of other short names nobody can trace, and no family document has ever been produced that settles it.

How old is the name Namon?

Namon first appears in US birth records in 1884 — 141 years ago. The typical Namon alive today was born around 1945, making them about 80 years old. About 500 people named Namon are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Namon most popular?

Namon peaked in 1884, reaching #848 nationally. See the whole 1884 chart.

Where it comes from

Our story of Namon

The Naaman of the Book of Kings is worth the detour whether or not he is behind this name. He was a Syrian general with a skin disease who came to Israel for a cure, was told by a prophet who would not even come out to meet him to wash seven times in the Jordan, and left in a fury, because the rivers at home were better rivers and he had expected something more impressive than a bath. His servants talked him round on the grounds that he would certainly have done something difficult if he had been asked, so he might as well do something easy. It is one of the few stories in the Hebrew Bible whose point is that the cure was insultingly simple.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source can be established. The resemblance to the Hebrew Naaman is close enough to be worth stating and far too loose to be treated as a derivation; the vowels do not correspond in any regular way, and the biblical name is rare in the American record while this one is not quite.

Pronouncing Namon

NAY-mun

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The second is reduced to nothing, which is why the record also holds Naman and Nayman with no audible difference.

Namon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1927, with 22 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Namon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, firm and easy to spell once heard, with nothing silent in it.
  • It is genuinely rare while containing no unfamiliar sound.
  • It goes with almost any surname.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Damon and Norman, both far commoner.
  • There is no meaning to give a child who asks.
  • It belongs to the oldest layer of the American record and reads that way.
