The story of Nahom
Nahum's book is three chapters on the fall of Nineveh, and his name sits oddly against its subject. Ge'ez and Amharic took the biblical names directly from the Greek and Hebrew, and the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition has kept a very full stock of them — Nahom, Yonatan, Dawit, Tewodros. Nahom is among the most-used men's names in Ethiopia and Eritrea today and reaches American records with families from both.
Meaning
comfort, consolation
From Hebrew nachum, comforted or consoled, built on a root meaning to comfort; the same root gives Nehemiah and Menachem their first elements.

The Juanjose test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nahom's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Juanjose climbed just as high around 1987, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Juanjose's path sketches the road Nahom is walking now.
Nahom sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning that is warm and direct.
- Very widely used in Ethiopia and Eritrea, so it has a large community behind it.
- Five letters and two syllables, easy to write.
- Nahum is the English biblical spelling and looks and sounds different.
- English readers will stress the first syllable and shorten the second.
- The prophet's book is about the destruction of a city, which sits oddly with the meaning.
