Mysti respells an English weather word with a y and an i, and whether the family had the word in mind, or a song, or neither, is not recorded. The y does pull the name toward a different word entirely — and that word has a double life worth knowing about.

Where it comes from

Our story of Mysti

English has two words that look identical here and are not related at all. One is Greek: a mystery was originally a secret rite, from a word meaning an initiate, built on a verb about closing the eyes or the lips — the point was that you were not to speak of it. The other is Latin, from ministerium, a service or an occupation, which came into medieval English as a word for a craft or trade and for the guild that controlled it. The great cycles of religious drama performed in English towns are called mystery plays because of the second word, not the first: each pageant was staged by a particular guild, and the assignments were often pointed. The shipwrights built the ark. The bakers did the Last Supper. The word for a trade and the word for a secret met in one spelling and the plays have been misunderstood ever since.

Not established

Read as a respelling of the English word, it means what the word means. The y spelling suggests the family may have been thinking of a different word instead, and nothing in the record confirms either. Names taken from ordinary words rarely leave any evidence of intent.

Pronouncing Mysti

MISS-tee

Two syllables with the stress at the front. Both changed letters are silent alterations: the y says the short i it replaced, and the final i says the long e that a y would have said.

Fashion outlook

Mysti sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is completely familiar even where the spelling is not.
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and hard to mangle.
  • The spelling is compact and fits any form.
What to consider
  • Misty is far commoner and will be written for it by default.
  • Both changes are inaudible, so the spelling has to be given aloud every time.
  • It reads as belonging to a particular stretch of American fashion.
