Myisha is one of at least a dozen English spellings of an Arabic name, and the woman it belongs to is one of the most consequential figures of early Islam. She was the Prophet's youngest wife, an authority on his life that later generations depended on, and at one point the commander of an army in a civil war fought against the fourth caliph. The word my at the front of this spelling is an accident.

Where it comes from

The story of Myisha

After the Prophet's death she became a scholar and a political figure, and both roles were unusual. Thousands of reports about his daily life and practice are transmitted on her authority, which made her one of the primary sources for the shape of Islamic law, and later scholars treated her testimony as central rather than supplementary. The political part is starker. When the succession was disputed she took a position, raised support, and was present at a battle named after the animal she was riding during it, which her side lost. She spent her remaining decades teaching. The name she carried is now among the most-used women's names in the Muslim world, and the number of English spellings it has generated reflects the fact that Arabic does not write short vowels and English has no fixed convention for supplying them.

Meaning

living

The Arabic name is built on a root meaning to live, and the reading is settled and uncontroversial. What this spelling adds is a false signal: the first three letters spell an English word, and English readers see it before they see anything else. That is an artifact of transliteration rather than a component of the name, and nothing in the Arabic corresponds to it.

How the name formed

  1. An Arabic name built on the root for life
  2. Carried by a scholar and a political figure of early Islam
  3. Arriving in English without short vowels written
  4. A dozen American spellings, this among them

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Arabic gives the name a different shape again, with a long opening vowel and the stress at the front, and none of the English spellings captures it well.

Myisha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1980, with 77 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Myisha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is soft and completely unproblematic for English speakers.
  • It connects to a name used across a very large part of the world.
  • Isha and Mya are two entirely different short forms and both stand alone.
What to consider
  • An English word is visible at the front of the spelling and readers will see it first.
  • A dozen spellings of one Arabic name are in circulation and yours is not the commonest.
  • The name carries a major historical figure, and that is worth knowing before it is chosen.
