Where it comes from

Our story of Myiesha

Admiral is an Arabic word with a Latin letter stuck in it. The source is amir al-, commander of — from phrases like amir al-bahr, commander of the sea — and Mediterranean Christians borrowed the title from Arab naval practice through Sicily and Spain, where it appears as amiral and amiratus. The d has no business being there. It seems to have been inserted in medieval Latin by association with admirari, to wonder at, the verb behind admire, which had nothing to do with the sea or with command. English kept the mistake and every other European language kept a version of it, so the senior rank in half the world's navies is a misspelling of a borrowed Arabic phrase, preserved because nobody noticed in time.

Not established

The family rests on an Arabic name meaning living or alive, an ordinary word in the language. This spelling cannot be assigned to it: the American builds in the group outnumber the transliterations and no source separates them.

Fashion outlook

Myiesha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both cuts produce short forms and each is a standing name.
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
What to consider
  • Myisha, Maiesha and Aiesha will all be written for it.
  • Syllable count varies between spellings, so the name is said two ways.
  • No meaning can honestly be claimed for this particular form.
