Myesha attaches a consonant to the front of a name that already existed. The name underneath it belongs to one of the most consequential women in early Islam, and the American name built on top of it has no connection to her at all — which is worth stating plainly rather than pretending otherwise.

Where it comes from

The story of Myesha

Aisha, the wife of the Prophet, outlived him by decades and spent them teaching. Something over two thousand hadith are transmitted on her authority, which makes her the most quoted single source in the whole tradition after the Prophet himself, and she is one of a very small number of women whose legal opinions were sought and recorded in the first Islamic century. Her name is ordinary across the Muslim world. In America it entered general use through a different door — the ending was already productive, and a set of names built on it appeared in the same decades — so Myesha, Nyesha and Ayesha sit in the record side by side, some of them Arabic and some of them constructions.

Meaningscholars disagree

living, alive

The Arabic name behind this one means living. Whether that meaning reaches this spelling depends entirely on whether a family took the name from Arabic or built it from a familiar ending, and both happened.

Myesha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1993, with 168 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Myesha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The stress in the middle gives it a lift most English names of its length do not have.
  • Both short forms are standing names elsewhere.
  • Every sound in it is easy for an English speaker.
What to consider
  • Myisha, Miesha and Myeshia are all in the record and will be written instead.
  • The Arabic name it resembles carries associations this spelling does not automatically inherit.
  • The first vowel is genuinely unsettled between MY and MEE.
